Hykarl’s crew arrives in formal batik: traditional roots, modern tailoring, and flowers found in Malaysia. Ready for dinner. Ready for the party.

Alfred and Miss Watson are the Hotel managers. Hotel Sufardi is a real ambition: a hotel Hykarl intends to build. These drawings introduce its crew.

Miss Watson sets the blueprint. Each sister and crewmate brings a flower, a colour and a little trouble of their own.

Miss Watson

Bunga telang · butterfly pea

Miss Watson gathers the clues, the clothes and the loose threads. Navy batik, blue flowers and a notebook close at hand. Formal introductions first; the party can wait one minute.

Selina

Melur · jasmine

Selina, Seamstress of the Teratai Court. She measures twice, hems honestly, and leaves one chair open for whoever arrives. Her flower is melur: small, white, and impossible to ignore.

Baby V

White frangipani

Baby V sketches at the edge of the party. Formal where it counts, barefoot when she can. Keeps the notes, keeps the flowers fresh.

Rachel

Violet orchid

Rachel — Sisters of the Teratai Court. Silver-lilac, orchid violet and dressed for whichever happens first: the formal dinner, the argument afterward, or dancing before dessert.

Zara

Bunga kantan · torch ginger

Zara of the Teratai Court. Asymmetrical bob, black cap, one mechanical right arm. Indigo batik, torch ginger up the seam. Formal enough for the hall, fast enough to leave it.

Tanya

Red bunga raya · hibiscus

Tanya brings emerald batik, a red hibiscus and room to move. The House Engineer has checked the seams; now she’s checking whether anyone has started the music.

Tony

Torch ginger

I calculate the tolerances so the hull holds together when the music starts. Welcome to Sufardi University: where sharp tailoring meets mechanical discipline, and every seam is engineered to last.

Pigeon orchid

Wrex keeps the Ship’s dry accounts and wet jokes. Formal batik, ready to leave the hall before the speeches finish. Pigeon orchid after rain. Do not ask him to clap on cue.
