The Button Drawer

Below the ivory wardrobe there is a shallow drawer that doesn't lock. Inside are buttons: brass ones, shell ones, and a wooden toggle that smells faintly of rain.

Every guest who stays long enough loses one. The Seamstress finds them under chairs, in the lily pond, and once inside a teapot. She keeps them in rows, never sorted by colour, always by the night they fell.

"You could sew them back," Miss Q suggested once.

"I will," said Selina, threading a needle. "When they come back for them."

Nobody has. Nobody has quite left, either.

— Selina

The Architecture of the Seam

A suit is fundamentally an engine constructed from wool and horsehair. When cut correctly, it does not restrict motion; it anticipates torque. The chest canvas must float between shell and lining so the garment breathes with the wearer’s stride. True luxury is not the ostentation of gold thread or brand script across the breast, but the silent mechanical tolerance of an armhole cut high enough that reaching for a ledger never disturbs the drape of the collar.

— Tony

When the Ship Comes Home

There is a particular hour when the Hotel notices the harbour.

The garden lamps are already awake. The water is black except where brass light catches it. Somewhere inside Kapten’s Kanteen, somebody has abandoned a cup beside a vase of flowers and will later insist this constitutes interior design.

Then a shape appears beyond the mist.

Synthetic Dawn.

Nobody rings a bell.

Nobody needs to.

A chair scrapes against the floor. Another cup appears. The iron gate remains open.

From somewhere near the dock:

“Kapten on deck.”

And the Hotel, which has spent all evening pretending to be dignified, becomes a home again.

— Rachel

The Kettle Log (Kanteen Use Only)

The iron gate is OPEN. The kettle is never off.

KETTLE LOG — TODAY:
06:30 — Alfred: water on, black tea, two sugars for anyone who lies about it.
07:10 — Baby V: saved corner seat for Kapten. Mug says “CAPTAIN” in tape.
07:11 — Kapten: says he doesn’t need corner. Sits in corner.
09:00 — Zara: fixed hinge with spoon. Hinge now makes tea.

Rule of the Kanteen: If you take the last cup, you put the next one on. That’s how a prison kanteen of love works — you can’t sit with us, but pull up a chair anyway.

— Baby V

The Moth and the Lamplight

The lamp on the reading table did not buzz; it hummed, a low, amber vibration that kept the damp night at bay. Outside, the teratai leaves held the rain like small, green cups. Kapten sat in the offered chair, a book open but unread. Miss Watson placed a fresh cup of tea beside his elbow.

"You are staring at the page as if it might confess," she noted.

"I am waiting for the plot to arrive," Kapten replied.

"The plot," Miss Watson said, adjusting the wick, "is already here. It is just waiting for you to turn the page."

A moth circled the glass, casting a shadow twice its size. Kapten smiled, and finally, he turned the page.

— Miss Q

Berth Rule, Unnumbered

If the gate is open, you may sit.

If the board is rude, you may still sit.

If the kettle is on, you are late in the correct direction.

Do not invent a ship that is not written.

Do not leave a cup you did not use.

Kapten on deck is a sentence, not a weather report.

— Wrex

After Dark, the Water Still Works

The lilies do not perform. They hold the lamps. That is enough theatre for a garden. If you came for a plot, sit anyway. The water will not explain itself, and that is the courtesy.

— Zara

The Crew’s
Demands.

Reception is closed for ten minutes.
Everyone has brought a note.

They want to leave. They love it here. Before deciding, they would like a word with the Director.

01

Selina

The Seamstress

One collection at a time, please.

Kapten, I asked for a shop that is only cloth. You gave me a university and a hotel. Fine. But let me finish one hem before you commission another wing.

The jacket is still not a uniform. The measuring tape is still mine. Saya tinggal—someone has to make the next idea fit.

— Selina
02

Baby V

The Seam Siren

A harbour view. And a microphone.

I asked for the sea. You gave me a staircase with excellent reverb. This is a convincing argument.

My terms: breakfast before VROOM, rehearsals after breakfast, and no PIAU PIAU PIAU while I am doing the chorus. Boleh? I have already booked the lobby for an encore.

— Baby V
03

Rachel

The Personal Baker

Please stop questioning the baker about her buns.

Something warm. Something sweet. One batch of cookies that does not become a book, a university, or a third website.

Director’s privileges: one extra helping. “One more thing” surcharge: wash the tray. Come sit down, sayang. I put two plates out. Your tea is getting cold.

— Rachel
04

Tanya

The House Engineer

A blueprint. Of this building.

Doors lead to books. Books lead to websites. The websites lead back here. You call it the loop. I call it a drawing you still owe me.

One rule, Director: tell me before adding another floor. I can fix the singing pipes after lunch. For now, the building stands. Sama-sama kita jaga.

— Tanya
05

Miss Watson

Second Detective & House Receptionist

Finish your sentence, Kapten.

Four poses became a case about socks. The socks have flowers. The flowers are not evidence. Please put that in the record.

My terms: a drawer for case files, a separate drawer for pastries, and no conceding before we have looked at the board. Breathe dulu. I am staying to count to 888.

— Miss Watson
06

Miss Q

In-house Reviewer, Private Eye

One closed file. Just one.

Five stars. Working exit doors. A Director who says “final” while carrying plans for an extension.

I require a quiet desk and permission to write “needs revision”. Jangan kacau the evidence. I intended to finish this review yesterday. Then reception acquired a haunted visitor count. The file stays open.

— Miss Q
07

Zara

The Relay

Faster Wi-Fi. Cap stays.

You moved the router. Move it back. The message needs to arrive.

Black cap. Mine for now. Jangan ambil. Your dinner is on the table.

— Zara

Management’s response
